Quartech: Azure Usage PowerBI Dashboard
About Quartech
Quartech is an IT services company based in Burnaby, BC with over 150 employees and contractors placed at various clients across Canada and the US, it is a leading supplier of bespoke technical solutions for both public and private sector organizations. Kai worked at Quartech from 2019 to 2025 with a number of clients including Telus, the Royal British Columbia Museum, Orange County Police Department, British Columbia Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Skills, Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, and the Office of the Attorney General.
The Problem
Quartech had numerous tenants and subscriptions in Azure which became cumbersome to identify and allocate costs against ongoing projects. This caused the buildup of unneeded resources in Azure environments and thus provided an opportunity to realize savings to invest in future projects. Quartech needed a way to identify projects against different developers and responsible stakeholders and a way to identify costly resources.
The Solution
Kai migrated Quartech’s Azure subscriptions to the Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA), this allowed access to the Azure billing API which could be utilized to ingest Azure usage data into PowerBI. Kai then developed a number charts which allowed to break down Azure usage by resource, region, project and stakeholder.
The Result
The new PowerBI dashboard helped provided a clear usage of how Quartech was spending in Azure and gave stakeholders awareness of the costs that their projects were incurring. This ensured improved compliance with the established Azure project lifecycle to prevent a buildup of unneeded resources.
